I’m on a diet: 1 pint of Cherries Garcia yogurt please

By Sheryl Kayne

Why do I reach for a pint of Cherry Garcia frozen yogurt (instead of ice cream because I am watching my weight) after a full dinner and having to unbutton my slacks? Researchers are convinced it has a lot to do with hormones. According to Andrea Giancoli, M.P.H., R.D., of the American Dietetic Association, hormone levels fluctuate based on how much you sleep, how many calories you consume and when, and what those calories consist of, meaning higher fats, sugars, and added stuffs. Now it seems researchers are zeroing in on four so-called “fat hormones.”

Ghrelin: A hormone secreted by your stomach and intestines, ghrelin rises when you haven’t nibbled in a while and falls after a midday meal. The trick to keeping ghrelin levels in check? “Don’t starve yourself,” says Giancoli, “and get enough sleep.” Ghrelin levels are higher in people who get less sleep. Hmmm. Count me into that one.

When A Diet Product Isn’t Very Dietey

By Sheryl Kayne

My friend Joe is learning how to shop and cook healthfully. He’d like to lose some weight and he’s started working out at a local gym with three friends. It’s working for him. He’s slowly losing weight. His energy level is much higher since he’s started fueling his body with healthier food choices and appropriate exercise.

This afternoon he was going on and on about how important it is to eat a healthy breakfast. He used to eat two or three bagels with cream cheese or a few croissants for breakfast but he’s changed his ways.

“This morning I ate the best breakfast and I’m still not hungry, three hours later!” he grinned broadly. “You should try it.”

The Joy of Baggy Clothes

By Sheryl Kayne

I love kids, I have two of my own, but I hate when I see their pants falling down. Teens and preteens are everywhere, wearing their long, over-sized trousers precariously perched around the groin area with an inch or two of underwear band showing.

I think the trend for baggy, posterior exposure began as a hip hop trend and made its way into the rest of the country. Just yesterday two middle-aged men came to my house, a furniture delivery man and a plumber. They had very different jobs but they both had extremely unattractive exterior revelations. Somehow I didn’t get the feeling that either of them was out to make a fashion statement.
